FIFA ticket categories explained
Category 1 — Premium midfield
The best seats in the stadium — lower tier, sideline, closest to midfield. You see the full tactical shape of the game, players are close, and the sightlines are optimal. These are the most expensive tickets by a significant margin. Best for: serious fans who want the best view and money is secondary.
Category 2 — Side stands
Side stand seats further from midfield, including upper tier side sections. Still excellent views of the full pitch. More affordable than Category 1 while still giving you a sideline perspective. Best for: the best value combination of view quality and price.
Category 3 — Behind-goal (end zones)
Seats behind the goals in the end zones. The cheapest category. You're watching from the end rather than the side, which means one team is always attacking toward you and one away. The atmosphere in end zones is often the loudest — where the most passionate supporters gather. Best for: budget-conscious fans and those who prioritize atmosphere over tactical view.
Sun and weather considerations
MetLife is an open-air stadium. June and July in East Rutherford, NJ are hot (85–95°F / 29–35°C) and often humid. The stadium's orientation means:
- Afternoon matches (3pm, 4pm, 5pm): Direct sun exposure for much of the match — especially for west-facing seats. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water.
- Evening matches (6pm, 8pm): Sun lower in the sky or set, significantly more comfortable. The Brazil vs Morocco (June 13, 6pm) and Norway vs Senegal (June 22, 8pm) matches will be more comfortable than daytime kickoffs.
- World Cup Final (July 19, 3pm): Mid-July afternoon sun in NJ will be intense. Prepare accordingly.
What changed from the regular stadium configuration
For the World Cup, MetLife underwent significant modifications:
- 1,750 seats removed to accommodate FIFA's larger playing field — the pitch is bigger than what the NFL requires
- Artificial turf replaced with natural grass — FIFA requires natural grass for World Cup matches
- Corporate branding removed — the stadium is renamed New York New Jersey Stadium under FIFA's clean stadium policy
- New bus terminal and TransitWay added for World Cup transit volume
Tips for match day at the stadium
- Arrive early — security and entry take time with 82,000 fans. Aim to be inside 60 minutes before kickoff.
- Bag restrictions apply — FIFA has strict bag size limits. Check the official policy before you pack.
- No general parking — NJ Transit or the official shuttle are your transit options. American Dream Mall has ~5,000 spots at $225 (ticket holders only, Final sold out).
- Food and drink inside — $12–$18 per beer, $10–$15 for food. Eat before you go if budget matters.
- Penn Station closes to non-ticket holders 4 hours before kickoff — plan your arrival accordingly.
