June 26 · BMO Field, Toronto
Senegal has one of the best World Cup group stage draws in the tournament for New York fans. Two of their three matches are at MetLife Stadium — France on June 16 and Norway on June 22. Only the Iraq match in Toronto takes them away from the New York metro area. For the Senegalese community here, this is essentially a home tournament.
Little Senegal — West 116th Street, Harlem
West 116th Street between Lenox Avenue and Frederick Douglass Boulevard is New York's "Little Senegal" — a West African cultural corridor that has been the center of the Senegalese community since the 1980s. The street has Senegalese and West African restaurants, boutiques selling fabric and jewelry, hair braiding salons, mosques, and community gathering spaces.
On Senegal match days, 116th Street transforms. Flags appear in the windows and on cars, music gets louder, and every available screen — in restaurants, community spaces, and sometimes on the sidewalk outside — becomes a watch party. The atmosphere before and after a big match, win or lose, is one of the most genuine soccer experiences in the city. Take the 2 or 3 train to 116th Street from anywhere in Manhattan.
Where to Watch on 116th Street
The West African restaurants along 116th Street are the primary watch venues. Le Baobab and other Senegalese restaurants on the block set up additional seating and screens for national team matches. Arrive at least 45 minutes before kickoff for either MetLife match — the neighborhood fills up fast. The streets outside the restaurants often become overflow viewing areas with crowds gathering around open windows and doors.
The Bronx — Grand Concourse and University Heights
The Bronx has a significant and growing West African community, particularly around the Grand Concourse corridor and in University Heights. Several Senegalese and West African restaurants and community spaces in these neighborhoods show national team matches. The Bronx's fan zone at Bronx Terminal Market (June 13–14) will also serve as a gathering point for West African fans in the opening weekend.
Senegal's Squad — Why This Team Is Special
Senegal are back-to-back African Cup of Nations champions — 2021 and 2023. They are not at this World Cup as tokens of continental representation; they are one of the genuine dark horses of the tournament. Sadio Mané leads a squad that includes Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson, Kalidou Koulibaly, Édouard Mendy, and Ismaïla Sarr. Their defensive organization under coach Aliou Cissé is world-class — they concede very few goals and are capable of beating top-five nations on a given day.
The June 16 match against France at MetLife is the rematch of the 2022 World Cup Round of 16, where France beat Senegal 3-1. The community here has been waiting four years for this game. The June 22 match against Norway is the one Senegal need to win to advance confidently. Both will be extraordinary occasions at MetLife and in the neighborhoods.

West African Food in NYC
West African cuisine is one of New York's best-kept food secrets. Before or after a match, the options near Little Senegal are excellent:
- Thiéboudienne — Senegal's national dish: slow-cooked fish over rice with vegetables in a rich tomato-based sauce. The benchmark for any Senegalese restaurant.
- Yassa — Marinated chicken or fish with caramelized onions, lemon, and Dijon mustard. Tangy, rich, and warming.
- Mafé — Peanut stew with lamb or beef, served over rice. One of West Africa's great comfort dishes.
- Bissap — Cold hibiscus flower drink, slightly tart, bright red. The Senegalese alternative to a soft drink.
- Café Touba — Spiced coffee with cloves and grains of selim, a uniquely Senegalese preparation. Strong and warming.
Getting to MetLife for Senegal Matches
Both Senegal MetLife matches are accessible the same way: NJ Transit from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction, then transfer to the Meadowlands match-day rail service. From Penn Station to MetLife takes about 45–60 minutes. Purchase NJ Transit World Cup tickets in advance — they sell out for high-demand matches. From 116th Street in Harlem, take the A/C/B/D down to 34th Street–Penn Station.
