Senegal 2026 World Cup Squad Guide
Of all the teams in the 2026 World Cup, Senegal arguably has the most New York-centric group stage draw. Two of their three matches are at MetLife Stadium — France on June 16 and Norway on June 22. Their only away game is in Toronto against Iraq. MetLife is effectively home for the Lions of Teranga, and New York's Senegalese community will be at full volume for both.
Senegal arrives as a genuine force. Back-to-back AFCON titles in 2021 and 2023 have established them as the best team in Africa. The squad is experienced, tactically disciplined under Aliou Cissé, and capable of beating anyone on their day. Their group — France, Norway, Iraq — is competitive but they would have taken it. The prize for advancing is a favorable knockout bracket position.

Key Players
Sadio Mané — The Icon
Mané's international legacy is already cemented — he led Senegal to their AFCON title in 2021 and remains the most celebrated Senegalese footballer in history. Playing in Saudi Arabia has reduced his European profile but not his influence in the national team. For Senegalese fans watching at MetLife on June 16, he is the reason they traveled.
Nicolas Jackson — The Next Generation
Chelsea's Jackson has emerged as one of the Premier League's most dynamic strikers. Fast, physical, and direct, he gives Senegal a different threat in the box than Mané — more instinctive finishing, less technical buildup. His partnership with Mané in front of goal is one of the most exciting attacking combinations for any African nation.
Kalidou Koulibaly — The Wall
Koulibaly has been the best African defender of his generation for most of the last decade. Now at Al Hilal after his time at Chelsea, he remains the defensive anchor for Senegal. His leadership, his aerial ability, and his experience of the highest levels of European football make him the cornerstone of whatever Cissé builds defensively.
Senegal's Two MetLife Matches
June 16 — France vs Senegal, MetLife Stadium: The rematch of the 2022 World Cup Round of 16, where France eliminated Senegal 3-1. This time Senegal are stronger, more experienced, and playing in front of a massive New York crowd. The atmosphere will be among the best of the group stage.
June 22 — Norway vs Senegal, MetLife Stadium: Arguably Senegal's best chance for a win in the group. Norway with Haaland are dangerous, but Senegal's defensive discipline makes them hard to break down. A win here and Senegal advance.

Little Senegal in Harlem
West 116th Street in Harlem is NYC's "Little Senegal" — a corridor of West African restaurants, boutiques, mosques, and community spaces that has been the center of New York's Senegalese community since the 1980s. On Senegal match days, 116th Street transforms. Flags appear, music fills the street, and every restaurant and community space becomes a watch party. Take the 2/3 or A/C/B/D to 116th Street for the full experience. The Bronx also has a significant Senegalese community around Burnside Avenue and University Heights.
