Norway's return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence is one of the tournament's great stories — and it arrives with Erling Haaland, the most prolific striker in recent football history, finally on the biggest stage. In New York, Bay Ridge Brooklyn is where the Norwegian-American community has been rooted for generations, and the June 22 MetLife match against Senegal is the moment the neighborhood has been building toward.

Bay Ridge — Historic Norwegian-American Brooklyn

Bay Ridge in southern Brooklyn has been a Norwegian-American neighborhood since the 19th century, when Norwegian sailors and dockworkers settled along the waterfront. The Scandinavian community is smaller now than in its peak — generations have moved to the suburbs — but the neighborhood retains a strong Norwegian identity through cultural organizations, a few remaining restaurants, and most importantly, a community that gathers for moments like this.

For the World Cup, Bay Ridge bars along Fifth Avenue and 86th Street will show every Norway match. The June 22 MetLife game against Senegal will be the biggest Norway soccer occasion in NYC in 28 years. Expect Norwegian flags, red and blue jerseys, and an atmosphere in the neighborhood unlike anything since 1998. Take the R train to Bay Ridge Ave or 86th Street.

The June 22 MetLife Match — Norway vs Senegal

This is Norway's must-win group match. France are the group favorites; getting a result against Senegal is the realistic path to the knockout rounds for Solbakken's side. Haaland will be the focal point — Senegal's Koulibaly and the defensive unit will have a clear plan to stop him, and the tactical battle in the center of the pitch will be the key.

Senegal's community in New York (Little Senegal on 116th Street in Harlem) will also be traveling to MetLife for this match. The crowd will be evenly split and passionate on both sides — two communities with a lot at stake in the same game.

Haaland's World Cup — What to Expect

Haaland scored 55 goals in 48 Norway appearances before this tournament. He scored 16 goals in World Cup qualifying alone. At club level with Manchester City he has broken scoring records that seemed unbreakable. The World Cup is the one competition where he hasn't yet defined himself — that changes in June 2026. If Haaland stays fit and Norway give him service, he can challenge for the Golden Boot and drag his team further than anyone expects.

Where to Watch Norway Matches in Manhattan

Beyond Bay Ridge, any dedicated soccer bar in Manhattan will show Norway matches. Scandinavian cultural connections run through much of NYC's bar culture — particularly in the East Village and the West Village, where several bars have Norwegian and Scandinavian ownership or regular Scandinavian customers who will be organizing watch parties for the Group I matches.
