🇳🇴 Norway 2–1 🇧🇷 Brazil — Haaland Brace at MetLife Sends Norway Into History
⚽ ROUND OF 16 — METLIFE STADIUM
🇧🇷 Brazil 1–2 🇳🇴 Norway
Haaland x2 • Norway's first ever World Cup quarterfinal
MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ • Round of 16 • Full time
It happened at MetLife. On the same pitch that will host the World Cup Final on July 19, Norway ended Brazil's 2026 campaign in one of the great upsets of the tournament. Erling Haaland scored twice — heading Norway into the lead and sealing the result late — as Ståle Solbakken's side made history, reaching their first-ever World Cup quarterfinal.
Norway have never lost to Brazil in any competitive meeting. They made it five from five at the grandest stage. Brazil's curse against European opponents in World Cup knockout football — unbeaten since the 2002 final, now eliminated in six of their last seven knockout ties by European sides — goes on.
How It Happened
Haaland had been quiet for stretches, but when the chance came, he delivered. His first — a thundering header from a Schjelderup cross — gave Norway the lead. Brazil equalised through Vinícius Jr. to make it 1-1 and set up a tense final half hour. Then Haaland struck again, sealing Norway's passage to the quarterfinals. Brazil missed a first-half penalty — Bruno Guimarães stepped up instead of Vinícius, and Ørjan Nyland saved it — a decision Carlo Ancelotti may reflect on for a long time.
What It Means
- Norway make history. First-ever quarterfinal. Their previous World Cup knockout was a Round of 16 loss to Italy in 1998 — 28 years ago. Haaland now has 7 goals in the tournament, the outright Golden Boot leader ahead of Mbappé (7) and Messi.
- Brazil are out. Ancelotti's first tournament in charge ends in the Round of 16. The search for a sixth World Cup continues. Vinícius, Martinelli, and Cunha were brilliant in patches but couldn't overcome the world's best striker on the day.
- Norway's quarterfinal: Winner of Mexico vs England tonight (8pm ET, Azteca). QF is Saturday July 11, 5:00 PM ET at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami. If England win, it's a blockbuster at Hard Rock. If Mexico win, the Azteca crowd will have sent them there in front of 100,000 people.
- MetLife's tournament is over — until July 19. The stadium goes quiet until the World Cup Final. This was its last knockout match before the championship game on this same pitch.
NYC Reaction
The stadium itself told the story — Brazil's fanbases, massive across Newark and the Ironbound neighborhood, Astoria and Sunnyside, were silenced as Haaland rose above Gabriel Magalhães. Norway's small but vocal traveling support, and a MetLife crowd that had largely adopted the underdog, went wild. Little Norway communities around Bay Ridge and Staten Island will celebrate tonight. Jackson Heights and the outer-borough Brazilian bars face a long night. Brazil fan guide → · Norway fan guide →
Tonight: Mexico vs England at the Azteca
The second R16 match of the day kicks off at 8:00 PM ET — Mexico vs England at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The winner faces Norway in Miami on Saturday. New York's enormous Mexican community in Corona and Sunset Park, and English supporters in Midtown and the Village, will be watching at full volume tonight. Full bracket →
