Fire Island Day Trip from NYC โ 32 Miles of Barrier Beach, No Roads, No Cars
Fire Island is a 32-mile barrier island with no public roads, no cars, and across most of its length no development beyond the small communities connected by boardwalk. The National Seashore covers 26 miles managed by the National Park Service: dunes, beach grass, the Sunken Forest, and miles of uninterrupted Atlantic beach with no commercial infrastructure. The car-free, boardwalk-only character of the island is genuinely off the grid by New York standards.
The National Seashore
The Fire Island National Seashore runs from the Robert Moses State Park causeway at the western end to Smith Point County Park at the eastern end. The Wilderness Area at the eastern portion is one of the few federally designated wilderness areas in the entire Northeast โ 1,400 acres of beach, dunes, and maritime forest with no structures of any kind. The Watch Hill campground offers the most backcountry camping available within 60 miles of New York City.
The Sunken Forest
The Sunken Forest at Sailors Haven is the ecological centerpiece of the Seashore โ a 200-acre maritime forest of American holly, shadblow, and sassafras trees growing in a sheltered bowl between the dunes, their canopy at or below the level of the dune crests that protect them from ocean salt spray. The forest has grown undisturbed for several centuries. A mile-long boardwalk loop traverses it.
Ocean Beach & the Communities
Ocean Beach is the largest and most family-oriented community, with restaurants, a market, and a small commercial center on boardwalk. Cherry Grove and the Pines, accessible from Sayville, are nationally known LGBTQ+ communities with a decades-long cultural history. Saltaire, Davis Park, and Kismet are quieter residential communities.
Getting There
LIRR from Penn Station or Atlantic Terminal (Brooklyn) to Bay Shore (for Ocean Beach and Sailors Haven), Sayville (for Cherry Grove and the Pines), or Patchogue (for Watch Hill). Bay Shore to Ocean Beach ferry runs roughly hourly in summer โ about 25 minutes, approximately $15 round trip. Total transit from Midtown: about 90 minutes.
