The Berkshires from NYC โ World Cup 2026 Overnight Guide
The Berkshire Hills have functioned as a cultural resort for New York and Boston since the Gilded Age. The cultural infrastructure is extraordinary: Tanglewood has hosted the Boston Symphony Orchestra every summer since 1938; MASS MoCA in North Adams is the largest museum of contemporary art in the United States; the Clark Art Institute holds one of the best French Impressionism collections in America. Tanglewood BSO season runs late June through Labor Day โ directly overlapping with the World Cup.
MASS MoCA
The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art occupies a former factory in North Adams โ 26 buildings on 16 acres, housing the largest contemporary art collection in the country plus performing arts. The scale allows works impossible in conventional galleries: James Turrell's light installations, Sol LeWitt's wall drawings (the largest permanent installation of his work anywhere), and Gunnar Schonbeck's musical instruments. Open year-round; tickets at massmoca.org.
Tanglewood
Tanglewood on the shores of Stockbridge Bowl lake in Lenox is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra โ one of the most beloved outdoor music venues in the world. The Koussevitzky Music Shed seats 5,000; the surrounding lawn accommodates thousands more on blankets under open sky. Concerts run Friday evenings, Saturday evenings, and Sunday afternoons. Book at tanglewood.org well in advance for July and August.
Lenox, Stockbridge & Great Barrington
Lenox is the Berkshires' most gracious village, surrounded by Gilded Age estate landscape. Edith Wharton's The Mount is open for tours and hosts summer theater. Stockbridge is the village Norman Rockwell painted for 25 years โ his studio is now the Norman Rockwell Museum. Great Barrington has the best independent restaurant scene in the region.
Getting There
By car: I-87 north to I-90 west (Massachusetts Turnpike), exiting at Lee (Exit 2) for Lenox and Stockbridge. Drive time is 2.5 to 3 hours from Midtown. No direct train service from New York โ a car is required.
