Southampton & Bridgehampton

Southampton is the oldest English settlement in New York State. Cooper's Beach on Meadow Lane regularly appears on lists of the best beaches in the country. The village center has excellent boutiques and a genuinely good farmers market. Bridgehampton, midway along the South Fork, has the most central location for accessing the whole region.

East Hampton

East Hampton's Main Street and Main Beach are the aesthetic anchors of the Hamptons brand: wide avenues lined with elms, white-painted churches, shingle-style mansions behind hedgerows. Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends to secure parking. The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill houses one of the best collections of American art on the East End.

Montauk

Montauk sits 16 miles east of East Hampton at the very tip of Long Island. The Montauk Point Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington in 1792, marks the end of the island. Ditch Plains Beach is the region's premier surf break. Six state parks in and around Montauk protect the most dramatic coastal terrain on Long Island.

Getting There

By car, take the Long Island Expressway (I-495) east to Route 27. Allow 2 hours for Southampton, 3+ for Montauk in light traffic. Summer Fridays can double these times. By train, the Long Island Rail Road serves Southampton, East Hampton, and Montauk — 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Penn Station.
