Newark's Ironbound: The World Cup 2026 Guide
The Ironbound district in Newark, New Jersey, is the most underrated dining destination in the New York metropolitan area and the best single pre-match dinner option for all eight MetLife Stadium World Cup fixtures. It is 20-25 minutes from Penn Station by NJ Transit, approximately 10 miles from MetLife Stadium by rideshare, and has more genuine Portuguese and Brazilian food than anywhere else in the United States outside of New England.
For Portugal fans, it is the community hub — every Portugal match is watched on Ferry Street with the kind of emotional intensity that comes from a community that has been here since the 1970s. For Brazil fans, it is the second-best option after Astoria in Queens. For anyone heading to MetLife for any of the eight matches, it is the answer to the question "where should we eat before the game?"

Take any NJ Transit train from Penn Station in Manhattan to Newark Penn Station. Trains run every 15-30 minutes throughout the day; the journey takes 20-25 minutes. From Newark Penn Station, the Ironbound is accessible in two ways:
- Walk: Exit Newark Penn Station toward Market Street and walk east. The Ironbound begins at the intersection of Market Street and Wilson Avenue — approximately 12-15 minutes. The walk takes you through downtown Newark, which is worth seeing.
- Rideshare: Uber or Lyft from Newark Penn to Ferry Street costs approximately $7-10 and takes 3-5 minutes. On match days when walking is less appealing, rideshare is the efficient choice.
Ferry Street — The Commercial Heart
Ferry Street is the main commercial corridor of the Ironbound — the restaurant mile that defines the neighborhood. Walking from one end to the other takes about 15 minutes and passes Portuguese bakeries, Brazilian churrascarias, Spanish tapas bars, and cafés that have been serving the community for decades. The competition is real: every restaurant on Ferry Street knows it exists next to 20 other options, which keeps quality high and prices reasonable by New York standards.
For Portuguese Food
Seabra's Marisqueira is the flagship Portuguese seafood restaurant in the Ironbound — grilled fish, bacalhau in its many preparations, and a wine list built around Portuguese producers. The bacalhau à Brás (shredded salt cod with eggs, potatoes, and olives) is one of the great Portuguese dishes, and Seabra's does it properly. For the 27+1 squad and every Portugal match, this is where the community gathers.
Brasão is another strong Portuguese option — piri-piri chicken (the spiced grilled bird that is Portugal's great contribution to the global food scene), cataplana (a sealed copper pan stew of seafood or pork), and excellent Alentejo reds from the wine list.
For Brazilian Food
Casa Nova and Brasilia Grill are the large-format Brazilian churrascarias — the rotating skewer service, unlimited meat, the salad bar with hearts of palm and Brazilian-style potato salad, caipirinha at the table. These restaurants are built for groups celebrating Brazil matches. The picanha (top sirloin cap with the fat cap intact, sliced tableside) is always the order. The caipirinhas here are made correctly.
For a Quick Pre-Match Bite
Several cafés on Ferry Street serve pastel (fried pastries with meat, cheese, or shrimp filling — the Brazilian street food that is the perfect stadium prep snack), pão de queijo (warm cheese rolls), and café com leite. Order standing at the counter, eat immediately, and head toward the rideshare to MetLife.
The Ironbound to MetLife — Timing
On match days, build your Ferry Street schedule around the 15-20 minute rideshare to MetLife and the need to arrive at the stadium 45-60 minutes before kickoff. For a 6pm kickoff, a 3pm or 4pm dinner at the Ironbound followed by a rideshare around 4:30-5pm gets you to MetLife with comfortable time to spare. Rideshare demand at that time on match days can add 5-10 minutes to wait times — account for it.
Portugal and Brazil Watching in the Ironbound
Portugal's World Cup matches — and Brazil's three MetLife group stage fixtures (June 13, 19, 24) — produce watch party events on Ferry Street and in the Ironbound's bars. The community is deeply invested. For Portugal specifically, the 27+1 squad and Ronaldo's sixth World Cup carry emotional weight that the Ironbound community feels specifically. Every Portugal goal scored anywhere in the US will be celebrated on Ferry Street.
