Newport, Rhode Island from NYC — World Cup 2026 Overnight Guide
Newport sits at the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, surrounded by Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic. For roughly four decades beginning in the 1880s, it served as the summer headquarters of the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Belmonts, who built enormous "cottages" along Bellevue Avenue — mansions now open to visitors. For World Cup visitors, Newport makes the ideal two-night detour.
The Breakers & the Mansion Trail
The most famous of Newport's cottages is The Breakers, the Vanderbilt family's 70-room Italian Renaissance palazzo on Ochre Point Avenue. Guided and self-guided tours run daily. The Cliff Walk
A 3.5-mile public footpath along the ocean edge of Bellevue Avenue, with mansion backs on one side and the Atlantic on the other. The full walk passes the rear facades of The Breakers, the Marble House, and Rough Point. Sneakers or hiking shoes are advisable — the southern section involves rocky terrain.
Beaches & the Waterfront
Easton's Beach (First Beach) is the closest ocean beach to downtown. Sachuest Beach (Second Beach) in Middletown is longer and typically less crowded. The downtown waterfront along Thames Street and Bowen's Wharf is lined with restaurants, shops, and the city's working marina.
Getting There
Take I-95 north through Connecticut and into Rhode Island, then Route 138 east across the Jamestown and Newport bridges. The drive is approximately 185 miles and takes 3.5 to 4 hours. A car is strongly recommended — Newport has no convenient train service from New York.
