Niagara Falls from NYC — World Cup 2026 Overnight Guide

Niagara Falls discharges more water than any other waterfall on earth by volume. Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side is a 167-foot curtain of water 2,600 feet wide. For international visitors spending weeks in New York for the World Cup, Niagara is the unmissable American experience — a landscape that exists nowhere else, reachable in a single overnight from the city.

Niagara Falls State Park

The New York side puts visitors at water level. The Maid of the Mist boat tour has operated since 1846 — boats depart from the base of the American Falls and move into the mist of Horseshoe Falls. Cave of the Winds, accessed by elevator from Goat Island, brings visitors to the Hurricane Deck just 20 feet from Bridal Veil Falls. Both require advance ticket purchase and operate May through October.

The Canadian Side

The best views of Horseshoe Falls are from Ontario, where Fallsview Boulevard runs along the gorge rim with unobstructed sightlines across the full width of the cataract. Crossing into Canada requires a valid passport — the Rainbow Bridge pedestrian crossing takes five minutes to walk. The Niagara Parks commission manages the Journey Behind the Falls and the Skylon Tower observation deck.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Fifteen minutes north of the falls on the Canadian side, Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the best-preserved Georgian towns in North America — a single main street of 18th- and 19th-century houses, active winery country, and the Shaw Festival theater running April through October.

Getting There

By car: New York State Thruway (I-90) west, 390 miles, 6 to 7 hours — generally uncongested west of Syracuse. By train: Amtrak Empire Service or Maple Leaf from Penn Station stops at Niagara Falls, NY in 8 to 9 hours. A two-night stay is recommended.
