Philadelphia from NYC — World Cup 2026 Day Trip Guide

Philadelphia is the shortest major-city getaway from New York and one of the most substantive. The Amtrak takes 70 minutes on the Acela — depart at 8 AM, spend eight hours in the city, and return by evening. Philadelphia is also a 2026 FIFA World Cup host city, with matches at Lincoln Financial Field in June and July.

Independence Hall & Old City

Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed, is a short walk from the Market-Frankford Line's 5th Street station. Entry requires a timed pass (free, available at the visitor center). The Liberty Bell Center next door is free and open daily. Elfreth's Alley — the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the country — is within a few blocks.

Philadelphia Museum of Art & Fairmount Park

The Museum of Art sits at the top of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The museum's steps, made famous by the Rocky films, are a required stop. The impressionist and post-impressionist collection inside is less celebrated than it deserves to be. Fairmount Park behind the museum offers miles of river trails and historic Boathouse Row.

Reading Terminal Market

Open since 1892, the covered market at 12th and Arch streets is one of the best urban markets in the country. Pennsylvania Dutch vendors sell pretzels and shoofly pie; regional butchers and fishmongers occupy the center; the cheesesteak and hoagie vendors represent the city's essential sandwich tradition. Arrive before noon.

Getting There

By train: Amtrak from Penn Station to 30th Street Station — 1 hour 10 minutes by Acela, 1 hour 25 minutes by Northeast Regional. Trains run roughly every 30 minutes during peak hours. By car: I-95 south, approximately 95 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes in light traffic.
