Saratoga Springs from NYC — World Cup 2026 Overnight Guide

Saratoga Springs occupies a singular place in American resort history. The Saratoga Race Course — the oldest sporting venue in continuous operation in the country — runs a six-week thoroughbred season from July through Labor Day, perfectly overlapping with the 2026 World Cup. For World Cup visitors looking to see a dimension of American culture well off the tourist map, Saratoga during racing season is a revelation.

Saratoga Race Course

The track opens at 7 AM most days for morning training — general admission to watch workouts is free, one of the best free activities in the state. Races begin at noon. Admission to the grandstands runs $5 to $10. The infield is family-friendly on weekends. Racing season 2026: July 3 through September 7.

Saratoga Spa State Park

The park covers 2,200 acres and contains the original 1930s bathhouses, two outdoor pools, the Roosevelt Mineral Baths (naturally carbonated mineral water), Saratoga Performing Arts Center — which hosts the New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra in summer — and extensive trails. A spa treatment in the original Roosevelt Baths is genuinely unusual.

Broadway & Downtown

The main commercial strip is compact enough to explore entirely on foot. Congress Park, adjacent to Broadway, is a formal Victorian park with the Canfield Casino, now a museum. The farmers market runs Saturday mornings. Dinner reservations require advance planning — restaurants book out weeks ahead on racing weekends.

Getting There

By car, take I-87 north — approximately 190 miles, three hours in light traffic. By train, Amtrak's Maple Leaf departs Penn Station daily and stops at Saratoga Springs in approximately four hours. The station is a 10-minute walk from Broadway.
