Storm King Art Center Day Trip from NYC — World Cup 2026 Guide
Storm King Art Center opened in 1960 and has grown into a 500-acre landscape of rolling meadows, forested hillsides, and a restored wetland — all animated by more than 100 large-scale sculptures by Alexander Calder, Richard Serra, Andy Goldsworthy, and others. For international visitors wanting a single memorable day out of New York, Storm King earns that billing.
Planning Your Visit
Tickets must be purchased in advance at stormking.org. Timed entry is required and weekends fill quickly in summer. Plan a minimum of three hours — most visitors spend four to five. Wear walking shoes; a full circuit covers several miles. Tram tours available.
Top Works to Seek Out
Richard Serra's Schunnemunk Fork — four massive Cor-Ten steel plates embedded in a hillside — is among the most photographed works on the property. Mark di Suvero's Pyramidian turns slowly in the wind across the main meadow. Andy Goldsworthy's Storm King Wall winds nearly a kilometer through the landscape, entering and exiting a pond. Maya Lin's Storm King Wavefield reshapes a portion of the terrain into grassy waves modeled on ocean swells.
Combining Storm King with Other Stops
Storm King is most efficiently combined with a stop in Beacon (20 minutes east by car) for Dia Beacon and a meal on Main Street. A circuit of Storm King in the morning, Dia Beacon in the afternoon, and dinner in Beacon before heading back south is a near-perfect New York day.
Getting There
Storm King is not served by public transit. Take the George Washington Bridge to the Palisades Interstate Parkway north, connecting to I-87. Exit at Newburgh (Exit 17) and head south on Route 9W. The drive takes about 1 hour 10 minutes from Midtown.
