Washington D.C. from NYC โ World Cup 2026 Overnight Guide
Washington is the most content-rich destination from New York in this guide โ and every Smithsonian museum is free. The Metro and walkable National Mall eliminate the need for a car entirely. Washington is also a 2026 FIFA World Cup host city, with matches at Audi Field. For World Cup visitors, an Acela down, night in the city, Acela back the next day is the highest-value extension of a New York trip that exists.
The National Mall
The Mall runs two miles from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, flanked by Smithsonian museums on both sides. The reflecting pool west of the Washington Monument leads to the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial โ where the Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address are inscribed on the chamber walls. The Jefferson Memorial sits on the Tidal Basin, best approached from the southwest end of the Mall.
The Smithsonian
The Smithsonian operates 19 museums in Washington, all free. The National Museum of African American History and Culture requires timed entry passes booked in advance at si.edu. The Air and Space Museum is the most visited museum in the country. The National Gallery of Art, also free, holds one of the finest art collections in the world.
Georgetown & Dupont Circle
Georgetown is the most walkable and photogenic neighborhood in the city โ federal-period brick townhouses, M Street shopping, and the C&O Canal towpath. Dupont Circle is DC's most cosmopolitan residential neighborhood with a dense concentration of restaurants and galleries around the circular park at its center.
Getting There
By train: Amtrak Acela from Penn Station to Union Station in 3 hours 30 minutes โ strongly the preferred option. Union Station is served directly by the DC Metro. By car: I-95 south, approximately 230 miles, 4 to 5 hours. Parking downtown costs $30 to $50 per day.
