Why Is This Different?
Previous World Cups had 32 teams in 8 groups. 2026 has 48 teams across 12 groups — a massive expansion. This means the knockout stage now starts one round earlier with a Round of 32 (instead of jumping straight to the Round of 16).

Why Doesn't Group Winner Always Play Group Runner-Up?
The bracket in 2026 is not simply "Group A winner vs Group B runner-up." The pre-set bracket structure means some group winners face best-third-place teams, and some runner-ups face other runner-ups. The specific assignments depend on which 8 third-place teams qualify — there are 495 possible combinations, and FIFA assigns R32 opponents using a fixed lookup table once the final third-place standings are known on June 27.
Extra Time & Penalties
All knockout matches are decided on the day. If level after 90 minutes: 30 minutes of extra time (2×15). If still level: penalty shootout. No away goals rule — that was abolished by FIFA in 2021.
