The Scams Happening Right Now

The NJ Attorney General and NYC Consumer Affairs have both issued warnings about fraudulent World Cup Final ticket sales. Here are the specific scams targeting buyers this week:

WhatsApp and Instagram "Deals"

Sellers in Jackson Heights, Astoria, and Washington Heights WhatsApp groups are offering "face value" or below-market Final tickets via private message. These are almost universally fraudulent. The pattern: payment requested via Zelle, Cash App, or Venmo (not reversible). Screenshot of a "ticket" sent as proof. The QR code is either fake, already used, or transferred to another buyer simultaneously.

Rule: Never buy a World Cup Final ticket from anyone via private message on any platform. Ever.

Outside MetLife Scalpers

People will approach fans outside MetLife Stadium on Sunday with physical or printed tickets for sale. Counterfeit tickets are common at this scale of event. Even genuine tickets can be "sold" to multiple buyers — the first scan at the gate works, subsequent scans don't. You will have no recourse at the gate on Final day.

Fake Ticketmaster Links

Search result ads and social media posts sometimes link to fake Ticketmaster lookalike sites. The URL is the tell — the real Ticketmaster is always ticketmaster.com. Check that the site URL begins with "https://www.ticketmaster.com/" before entering any payment information. All links on this site route to the correct verified Ticketmaster URL.

The Only Safe Options

Ticketmaster verified resale (all links on this page), StubHub with FanProtect, SeatGeek with buyer guarantee. Nothing else for an event of this scale.
