World Cup NYC 2026: Complete Transportation Guide
Getting around New York for the World Cup involves three separate challenges: getting from the airport to your hotel, moving around the city during the tournament, and getting to MetLife Stadium on match days. Each requires a different strategy.
Getting to MetLife Stadium
Option 1: NJ Transit rail β $98 round trip (recommended)
The official route. Take any subway to Penn Station, then NJ Transit to Secaucus Junction, then Meadowlands event service to the stadium. About 45β60 minutes from Midtown. World Cup special tickets cost $98 round trip and must be booked in advance at njtransit.com β only 40,000 per match, they sell out.
Option 2: Official NYNJ Stadium Shuttle β $20 round trip
The cheapest option. Runs from designated pick-up points in Manhattan and New Jersey. Limited capacity β book early. See our shuttle bus guide.
Option 3: Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
Surge pricing on match days. Expect $60β100+ from Manhattan to MetLife, and significantly more for the return β thousands of fans trying to leave simultaneously. Post-match pickup waits can be 45β60 minutes. Only recommended if rail and shuttle are sold out.
Option 4: Driving
No general parking at New York New Jersey Stadium. Limited premium parking at American Dream Mall (~5,000 spots, $225/match, ticket holders only, connected to stadium via walkway). Final parking is already sold out. Traffic on Route 3 and NJ Turnpike is severe on match days. Not recommended unless you have a specific reason.
MetLife options compared
| Option | Cost (RT) | Time | Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| NJ Transit rail | $98 | 45β60 min | High |
| Official shuttle | $20 | 60β90 min | Medium |
| Rideshare | $120β200+ | 30β90 min | Low (surge) |
| Driving | $225 American Dream + tolls | 30β120 min | Low (traffic) |
Getting around NYC during the tournament
NYC Subway β $3 per ride
The default for city movement. Tap your contactless card (OMNY) at any turnstile. Runs 24/7. Reaches Midtown, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and all major fan neighborhoods. Does not serve New Jersey or MetLife. Full guide: NYC Subway Guide.
PATH Train β $3 per ride
Connects Manhattan to Jersey City, Hoboken, and Newark. Useful if you're staying in New Jersey or want to explore across the river. Runs frequently and is less crowded than the NYC subway.
NYC Ferry
Expanded service for summer 2026. Connects waterfront neighborhoods β Williamsburg, DUMBO, the Upper East Side, Astoria. Slower than subway but scenic. $4 per ride. Good for non-rush movement between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Rideshare within the city
Fine for short trips but expensive during surge. On MetLife match days, rideshare demand spikes citywide β not just near the stadium. Factor that into any match-day plans that involve Uber or Lyft.
Getting from airports to the city
JFK Airport
Take the AirTrain to Jamaica ($8.25) then LIRR to Penn Station (~25 min, ~$15) or subway (A train, ~75 min, $3). Rideshare costs $50β80+ with surcharge. Full guide: NYC Airports Guide.
Newark Liberty (EWR)
AirTrain to Newark Airport Station, then NJ Transit to Penn Station NYC (~30 min, ~$18 total). Best airport for fans staying in NJ. Note: EWR AirTrain is under construction in 2026 β check njtransit.com for current connection details.
LaGuardia (LGA)
No direct rail connection. Take the Q70 bus to Jackson HeightsβRoosevelt Ave subway station, then subway. Or rideshare (~$35β60 to Midtown without surcharge). Budget 60β90 minutes.
