World Cup 2026 Group Stage — The 10 Biggest Upsets & Surprises
48 teams, 64 matches, 18 days. The 2026 World Cup group stage delivered history, heartbreak, and moments nobody predicted. Here are the ten stories that defined it.
1. 🇪🇨 Ecuador 2–1 🇩🇪 Germany — MetLife Stadium
The defining moment of the group stage. Ecuador — a team that drew with Curaçao in their opening match and needed a miracle — came to MetLife on June 25 and beat Germany 2-1. The result didn't change Germany's qualification (they topped Group E on goal difference) but it was the tournament's most shocking individual result. For NYC's Ecuadorian community in Jackson Heights, it was a night to remember forever. The streets of Roosevelt Avenue were reportedly packed until 2am. Full match report →
2. 🇨🇻 Cape Verde — 3 Draws, 0 Wins, Still Qualified
Cape Verde advanced from Group H as runners-up without winning a single game. Three draws — against Spain (0-0), Uruguay (2-2), and Saudi Arabia (0-0) — gave them 3 points and second place in a group where nobody else won games either except Spain. It's one of the most unusual qualifications in World Cup history. They now face Argentina in the Round of 32 in Miami on July 3 — the ultimate underdog story continues.
3. 🇨🇩 DR Congo — First Knockout Stage Since 1974
DR Congo (formerly Zaire) last appeared in a World Cup in 1974. This year they qualified from Group J as one of the 8 best third-place teams, beating Uzbekistan 3-1 in their final group game. Their first-ever World Cup finals goal came in that tournament, scored in stoppage time of the group stage. They now face England on July 1 in Atlanta — the fairytale run continues.
4. 🇸🇳 Senegal 5–0 🇮🇶 Iraq — Jackson Heights Celebrates
Senegal came into MD3 needing a miracle — 0 points from their first two games. They delivered a stunning 5-0 demolition of Iraq while France beat Norway 4-1. Senegal's 3 points and GD+2 put them on the bubble for best third-place qualification. Ultimately they didn't make it (other third-place teams had better records) but the performance itself was jaw-dropping. NYC's Senegalese community in Harlem had a short-lived but incredible celebration.
5. 🇧🇪 Belgium — The Golden Generation's Last Stand
Belgium entered the tournament as dark horses with De Bruyne, Lukaku, Courtois, and the remnants of their "Golden Generation." They were outplayed by Egypt, drew Iran, then needed Lukaku to score in the 85th minute against New Zealand to top Group G. They advance — but hardly convincingly. Their Round of 32 against Senegal on July 1 in Seattle is a true 50/50.
6. 🇫🇷 France 4–1 🇳🇴 Norway — Perfect Group Stage
France were the dominant force of the group stage. Nine points, +8 goal difference, Mbappé at his mercurial best. Their 4-1 demolition of Norway in LA was a statement of intent. Norway — who many expected to challenge — came into MD3 on 6 points and left beaten. France are the odds-on tournament favorites heading into the knockout stage.
7. 🇩🇿 Algeria 3–3 🇦🇹 Austria — The Wildest Game
The Group L finale on June 27 was the most dramatic match of the group stage. Algeria and Austria traded goals in a 3-3 draw that somehow sent both teams through. Messi scored for Argentina simultaneously in the other game. Iran watched from afar as that 3-3 draw — ironically — eliminated them from the best third-place standings. Jordan's result: moot. Argentina topped Group L with 9 points, perfect record.
8. 🇦🇺 Australia — Qualifying as Best 3rd Place
Australia advanced as one of the 8 best third-place teams from Group D — a group that also contained USA, Türkiye, and Paraguay. The Socceroos didn't win a match outright but accumulated enough points to advance. They face Egypt on July 3 in Dallas in a genuinely unpredictable Round of 32 encounter.
9. 🇬🇭 Ghana — Back in the Knockouts
Ghana hadn't been past the group stage since 2010. In 2022 they were eliminated in the group. In 2026 they came back with a vengeance — beating Panama 1-0, drawing with England 0-0, then losing to Croatia 1-2 in MD3 but still advancing as a best third-place team. The Black Stars face Colombia on July 3 in Kansas City — their biggest match in 16 years.
10. 🇵🇾 Paraguay vs 🇩🇪 Germany — The Match Nobody Predicted
Paraguay advancing as a best third-place team from Group D earned them a Round of 32 berth against Germany in Foxborough on June 29. Nobody had Paraguay in the Round of 32 when the draw was made. Almirón and company get to face one of the tournament giants. It's the kind of matchup that the expanded 48-team format was designed to create — and nobody's complaining.
