The Perfect One-Day NYC World Cup Experience

New York City is the hub of the US East Coast rail network. Philadelphia is 90 minutes away. Washington DC is 3 hours. Boston is 3.5 hours. For the millions of people who live within Amtrak range of Penn Station, the 2026 World Cup is accessible as a day trip — or a quick overnight if you want to extend the experience. This guide is built for that person: arriving in the morning, optimizing every hour, and making the 6pm or 10pm train home.

Option A: Day with a MetLife Ticket

Morning — Arrive at Penn Station

Arrive by 10am for a 3pm kickoff, or noon for a 6pm kickoff. Take the 7 train from Times Square (one stop from Penn on the A/C/E) to 82nd Street–Jackson Heights. This is your lunch stop — the best value eating in New York City and the most energetic pre-match atmosphere in the boroughs. Allow 90 minutes minimum in the neighborhood.

Lunch — Jackson Heights

La Pequeña Colombia (83-27 Roosevelt Ave) — bandeja paisa for $20. Order it. Eat everything on the plate. Then walk the avenue and absorb the pre-match energy — jerseys, flags, screens in restaurant windows already showing coverage. If the match you're attending involves Colombia, Ecuador, or Argentina, the neighborhood is already electric by noon.

Match Day Transit — Queens to MetLife

From Jackson Heights: 7 train west to Times Square, A/C/E to 34th Street–Penn Station (or walk 10 minutes from Times Square). Buy your NJ Transit World Cup ticket in the app before you left home — this is non-negotiable. Board the NJ Transit train from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction, then the Meadowlands shuttle. Allow 75 minutes from Penn Station to your MetLife seat.

The Match

90 minutes of football at the biggest World Cup stadium in North America. Everything in the first match guide applies — arrive with enough time to find your seat, don't rush the exit, stay 10-15 minutes after the final whistle.

Evening — Post-Match and Departure

From MetLife back to Penn Station: approximately 60-75 minutes. For a 3pm kickoff you're back at Penn by 8-8:30pm. Eat at the Penn Station neighborhood (abundant options on Eighth and Ninth Avenues in Hell's Kitchen) or grab food at the station. Check your return Amtrak departure — last trains to Philadelphia run around 10-11pm; to Boston and DC, similar or later. Build in buffer for World Cup day transit delays.

Option B: Day Without a MetLife Ticket

Morning — Fan Zone or Arrival

Arrive at Penn Station by 10am. Head directly to the nearest fan zone — Hudson Yards Big Screen is a 15-minute walk from Penn Station. Free, outdoor, 30-foot screen, walk-up. Watch the morning match (noon ET) here with the fan zone crowd. No registration required.

Midday — Jackson Heights Deep Dive

After the morning match, A/C/E from 34th Street to Times Square, then 7 train to 82nd Street–Jackson Heights. Arrive around 1-1:30pm. Walk the whole Roosevelt Avenue corridor from 86th to 74th Street — take in every restaurant, every bakery, every bar with a screen visible from the street. Lunch at La Pequeña Colombia or Ecuadorian ceviche from one of the side-street restaurants.

Afternoon — Flushing (optional) or Astoria

Flushing option: Stay on the 7 to Main Street. Walk the food courts under the New World Mall — one of the most extraordinary food destinations in the US. Budget 60-90 minutes. Astoria option: 7 to Times Square, N/W to Astoria–Ditmars Blvd. Walk Ditmars and 31st Street — Greek restaurants, Brazilian cafés, North African spots. Dinner at Taverna Kyclades if you can get a table.

Evening — Soccer Bar for the 6pm Match

Back to Manhattan for the evening match. Nevada Smith's (74 Third Ave, East Village) for the most atmosphere. Arrive 45 minutes before the 6pm kickoff. After the match (finishing around 8pm), you have 2-3 hours before the last Amtrak departure. Late dinner in the East Village or Koreatown, then Amtrak home.

Day Trip Logistics from Nearby Cities

From Philadelphia

Amtrak from 30th Street Station — 1.5 hours, runs every 30-60 minutes. First morning train around 5:30am; last train back around 10-11pm. A day trip to NYC for a 3pm or 6pm MetLife match is perfectly comfortable. Round trip: approximately $60-100 on Amtrak depending on booking timing.

From Boston

Amtrak Acela or Northeast Regional from South Station — 3.5-4.5 hours. The math for a same-day trip to a 3pm match works if you take a 7am train (arrive 10:30am, leave by 9pm for the last feasible return). Doable but tiring. An overnight makes more sense for Boston visitors.

From Washington DC

Amtrak from Union Station — 3 hours (Acela), 3.5-4 hours (Regional). An early departure (7am Acela, arrive 10am) gives a full day with a 6pm match plus post-match dinner before the 10:30pm return. Round trip Acela: approximately $150-250.
