🇫🇷 France 1–0 🇵🇾 Paraguay — Mbappé Fires Les Bleus Into the Quarterfinals
⚽ ROUND OF 16 — PHILADELPHIA
🇵🇾 Paraguay 0–1 🇫🇷 France
Kylian Mbappé 70' (pen)
Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia • Round of 16 • Full time
In sweltering Philadelphia heat, France did what they almost always do — find a way. Paraguay produced 70 minutes of some of the most organized and physically committed defending in this tournament, neutralizing Mbappé, Olise, and Dembélé with disciplined low blocks and aggressive pressing. Then Matías Galarza brought down Rabiot inside the box, and it was over.
Mbappé stepped up, sent the keeper the wrong way, and France had their ticket to the quarterfinals. It was his 7th goal of the tournament — tying the all-time record for a single World Cup. He now has 18 World Cup goals in total, closing in on Messi's all-time record of 19.
Paraguay Were Magnificent — Until They Weren't
This was the tightest France have been pushed in this tournament. Paraguay held France to a 0-0 at halftime — the first time Les Bleus have been goalless at the break in 2026. Enciso and Almirón were superb in midfield, suffocating the French build-up and winning ball after ball. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill — the hero of the Germany shootout — made several vital stops before the penalty.
It ends a remarkable Paraguayan campaign. They beat Germany on penalties in one of the greatest upsets of the tournament, then gave the favorites a real fright. La Albirroja leave as one of the stories of 2026.
France vs Morocco — A 2022 Semifinal Rematch
