The Matchup
This is Match 91 — one of the eight Round of 16 ties. MetLife gets the winner of Match 76 (Winner Group C vs Runner-up Group F) against the winner of Match 77 (MetLife's own June 30 Round of 32 match).
In plain terms: the team that wins at MetLife on June 30 plays here again on July 5 — they don't travel. That means the June 30 winner gets a home-stadium advantage in the Round of 16, with the NYC crowd already familiar with them from five days earlier.
✅ CONFIRMED: Brazil vs Norway. Brazil beat Japan 2-1 in Houston thanks to a stoppage-time Gabriel Martinelli winner. Norway beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in Dallas — Antonio Nusa opened the scoring, Amad Diallo equalized for the Ivorians, but Erling Haaland's 86th-minute strike sent Norway through. Vinícius Jr. vs Haaland at MetLife is genuine box-office. Brazil's huge NYC community (Little Brazil St, Astoria, Flushing) and Norway's smaller but passionate following (Midtown, Scandinavia House) make this one of the most-anticipated R16 matches in the city.
📅 How the bracket fills in
- June 27 — Groups C, F, I all finish. Group winners/runners-up confirmed.
- June 28–30 — Round of 32 bracket announced; Match 76 and 77 played.
- July 1–3 — Remaining Round of 32 matches complete.
- July 5, 4pm ET — Match 91 at MetLife.
July 4th Weekend — What to Know
July 5 falls the day after Independence Day. This creates a perfect storm of high demand: the July 4th holiday weekend crowds are still in NYC, the World Cup Round of 16 is in town, and NJ Transit will be busier than a normal match day. Plan accordingly:
- Buy NJ Transit tickets as soon as they go on sale — they sell out for knockout matches
- Road traffic on July 4th weekend is among the worst of the year — avoid driving
- Hotels near MetLife and in Midtown/Newark will be priced at a premium. Book now.
- NYC July 4th fireworks are July 4th (night before) — if you're staying overnight, factor that in
Fan Zones on July 5
- Hudson Yards Big Screen — Free, walk-up, 30-foot screen. Best free option near Penn Station for pre-match. Guide →
- Brooklyn Bridge Park Fan Zone — Open through the knockout rounds. Details →
- Note: Rockefeller Center Fan Village opens July 6 — one day after this match. July 5 watchers use Hudson Yards or bars.
Getting to MetLife
NJ Transit from Penn Station → Secaucus Junction → Meadowlands shuttle. ~$98 round trip, buy well in advance. For a 4pm ET kickoff aim to board by 1:30pm. July 4th weekend demand means trains will be fuller than a typical match day — consider arriving at Penn Station 30 minutes earlier than usual.
