France were the best team in the group stage bar none — 9 points, +8 goal difference, 10 goals scored, 2 conceded. Kylian Mbappé returns to MetLife Stadium having scored here in the group stage. Ousmane Dembélé and Antoine Griezmann provide width and creativity. France are odds-on favorites to win the tournament outright and this match is their first step through the bracket.

🇸🇪 Sweden

Sweden's qualification story is one of the tournament's best — they drew all their games including a famous 1–1 against Japan that secured their best 3rd-place spot. Alexander Isak of Newcastle leads the attack and is one of the most dangerous strikers in Europe. Sweden will sit deep and hit on the counter. They've shown they can hold their shape — but France have too many weapons for this to be anything other than a tough night for Blågult.

The third-place opponent is determined by which of the best third-place teams across five groups draws this slot in the bracket. That matchup is announced by FIFA on June 28, giving fans 48 hours to plan.

What to Expect on June 30

The Round of 32 is a different beast from the group stage. Every team is playing elimination football from minute one — no safety net, no "we can afford a draw." The atmosphere at MetLife for knockout matches is categorically more intense: flags everywhere, chants louder, the stadium quieter in the tense moments and louder when it breaks.

For NYC specifically, June 30 is also the day the French Quarter in Manhattan (around the French consulate area in the Upper East Side), the Norwegian community in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, and the Senegalese diaspora in Harlem and the Bronx are all watching the bracket with enormous stakes. Whoever is playing, New York has fans for them.

Getting to MetLife for the Round of 32

Same as every MetLife group stage match — NJ Transit from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction, then the Meadowlands shuttle to the stadium. Budget $98 round trip and buy in advance. Allow 90 minutes from Midtown Manhattan. For a 10:00 PM ET kickoff, aim to be on a train by 2:30–3pm.
